Bathroom design has come a long way since people used the kitchen near the stove or if they were lucky enough to convert an old closet into a make shift bathing area where they hauled in the old tin tubs that were previously stored in their backyard sheds to garner some form of privacy when taking a bath. Hollywood popularized baths by showing stars lounging in lavish bathing areas surrounded by elegant marble and other sumptuous accessories that the common public had never seen before and now wanted in droves. Bathroom design was born as people realized they did not have the cash or space that Hollywood portrayed these bathrooms to be. They soon realized that they had to optimize their resources to get their dream bathroom in the limited space and finances they had.

Money, of course is probably the one defining factor that will limit or allow you to create the bathroom of your dreams. The next most important thing that will influence the outcome of your bathroom project is ultimately your plan. A plan allows you to discover your priorities and limitations and gives you confidence and direction about how to proceed. So the best way to protect your investment and save you a lot of headaches and regrets is to set up a comprehensive planning guide. This three-phase guide should include a project checklist of materials, scheduling and costs.

The first phase of the checklist should include the materials to be used along with the cost and quantity of each. Examples of these would be recognition and cost of new faucets, vanity tops and covering walls etc.

The second phase examines possible major alterations in your bathroom such as structural changes, new plumbing lines and new fixtures like a tub or toilet.

The third and last phase pulls everything together. Here you should have a pretty good idea of how long the project will take and how much it will cost you to finish. From this you will be able to determine how much work you can do yourself and what you have to contract out to compute your labor costs.

The checklist should be very specific about the tools and supplies you will need. If you don’t have a piece of equipment that you need, write it down and include it in your cost. Don’t speculate, find out for sure and you won’t get any nasty surprises later on when you realize you have to rent something in order to finish the job. If you don’t know for sure, ask someone who does and if you don’t know about it, more than likely you should leave it to the professionals anyway to avoid a costly repair later on because of your inexperience. From paint to paint brushes, everything must be included in the budget and must be on hand in ample supply when you begin your bathroom renovation project so everything can progress smoothly without interruptions or delay.

Another great thing about a checklist is that as you shop around for information you will be able to see the possibilities that you never saw before. There are so many new concepts and innovative products coming out for the bathroom everyday, don’t limit yourself to your preconceptions but remain open to the potential, just remember to stay within your budget and maintain a general theme that will hold your new bathroom planning and design together.
