Alberta Hardwood Floors on Cork Flooring in Your Bathroom

It occurred to me that the only time that people seem to think about the ground that they’re walking on is if they trip over it or when remodelling their homes. With all the buzz about going green, homeowners are following the trends and looking for natural, earth-friendly products when renovating their bathrooms. There are a number of sustainable flooring merchandise on the market such as bamboo flooring and cork flooring products. Down at the Calgary Home + Interior Design Show, I literally walked onto the Alberta Hardwood Flooring display and had an interesting conversation with Kevin one of the companies’ sales consultants about cork as a possible bathroom flooring material.

Founded in 1985, Alberta Hardwood Flooring is a specialty flooring company that specializes in floating floors for both residential and commercial consumers and has a wide selection of traditional, contemporary, and futuristic flooring styles. They cover every aspect of your flooring needs, from design through installation and finishing.

Cork floors are made from the bark of Cork Oak trees. The bark from these special trees is carefully harvested every nine years which is about the time it takes for the bark to regrow. The best thing about the process is that the harvesting of the bark does not harm the Cork Oak tree that can live up to 200 years, making it a great source of renewable wood. Due to its composition cork is a natural insulator (both thermal and acoustic) so your rooms will maintain a comfortable indoor temperature while reducing sound reproduction. And for those that suffer allergies, cork is hypoallergenic. Not only is it an insect repellent it’s also naturally fire retardant. Another nice property of cork is that it is a pleasant surface to walk on due to its natural elasticity. The only downside to cork is, because it is composed of millions of tiny honeycomb air pockets, if not treated properly, it could be susceptible to moisture absorption. So you should use cork flooring in your bathroom in moderation. Powder rooms and smaller sized bathrooms (half baths) would be best, anywhere else in your home the sky is the limit.

Cork flooring is durable and with proper care will last for decades. Not only is cork a great way to dress up your floors, it’s warm to the touch and naturally air-cushioned for quiet sound reduction. And to top it off it is an inexhaustible and natural resource, so you can jump on the green bandwagon with a clear conscience. To find out more about this natural renewable product contact:
