Creating a Fresh Country Style Theme
14
A country style theme in your bath is a look that is loved for its ties to the rural, less complicated way of life, with its laid back attitudes and reflections of our nostalgic past. The period vintage look and charm of beaded-board wainscoting gives a nod to the antiquated style of sink faucets and handmade weathered furniture and patterns with simple shapes, fresh colors and bold patterns. When designing your bathroom, the country look can give your master or regular bath a fresh new impression, all you have to do is pick a unifying element or focal point such as a rustic object, material, shape, color or pattern and then fill your bathroom with related vintage items to enliven and decorate the space and give your bath a fresh country feel.
To create a country style bathroom you need to include natural materials and hand made items whose imperfections will go a long way in creating a classical country farmhouse style and feel. A County bathroom theme can take many different forms ranging from the old fashioned fabric patterns and furniture from real country homes to the pastel hues and subtle accents of a more rustic cottage hide-away. As with most good design, simplicity is best, choose a style within the country theme and only include elements that carry that theme through out your bath.
One way of generating the country style look is through the technique of creating a distressed appearance by weathering new painted cabinetry and painted surfaces to look aged and lovingly used. One of the most noticeable features is the vintage style of your fixtures. Include a freestanding tub and as a clever touch add a draped curtain around it reminiscent of the olden days. Old fashioned faucets along with a pedestal sink are both functional and unique to round off your country bathroom decor. Another common technique is to combine charming mismatched furnishings such as padded window seats and upholstered chairs contrasted with something such as an old storage cabinet converted into a sink and vanity.
Some common country style vintage details include a tub filler with a hand-held shower. How about a hand painted porcelain basin along with a stand alone cupboard for storing towels, accessories and other toiletries. White shutter casements as window dressing are a great way to bring a sense of charm to your country style bath. If you have the room, add a quaint anteroom adjacent to your washroom with delicate green vine inspired patterned wall paper to use as a ready room or changing room. Old vintage throw rugs and wicker baskets used as storage containers or even a hamper add rustic charm. Subtle details are also important to finish the look so don’t forget to add groupings of antique jars filled with cotton balls, bath salts and bath oils or even sea shells. Rustic hand made furniture, vintage door knobs and other classical pulls for your drawers, antique looking light fixtures (or even a chandelier) along with airy lace or sheers on your windows will add to the believability and flavour of your country style bathroom. You can display your collectibles on a rustic rough hewn shelf and don’t forget you do have the prerogative to include elements that may not be entirely country styling but you think goes well with the other elements. The feeling you are trying to create sometimes outweighs the elements, so experiment and have fun creating your country style themed bathroom.
