In part 1 of Bathroom Stylistic Trends we examined minimalist bathroom design, that style being personified by gleaming white fixtures and near pristine white walls with white floors and simple fixture shapes. We discovered that style is not only a feeling but it is how your bathroom looks as well. We also found out that choosing materials and designing your bathroom go hand in hand together. When we think of the term “period” we are referring to the stylistic trends of a certain point in time, an example being the 1930’s or 1980’s fashionable taste in furniture, architectural features, colors, textures, materials and decor. When trying to emulate a “period” bathroom you are trying to recreate the style of that particular era while remaining faithful to the shapes, colors, textures and décor from the past.

Doing design research for your bathroom’s style from a specific “historical period” can be a lot of fun as you revisit the past. Most of the time you are not trying to exactly recreate the historical reference but you are simply trying to stylistically interpret the mood and ambience of the space. So don’t be afraid to experiment by combining stylistic remodeling elements that may not be historically accurate but still contribute to the theme you are trying to recreate. Adhering too strictly to styles and traditions may actually hinder your progress because you can’t find the exact replica of the tub or faucet that you want to incorporate into your design.

An example of a "period" bathroom trend would be an Art Deco styled bathroom. The Art Deco movement was a mix of many diverse styles and movements of the early 20th century, including such styles as: Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1940s mainly because it was purely decorative in nature. It was art for the sake of art, so to speak. Art Deco was primarily based on mathematical geometric shapes and was widely considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and stylish modernism.

If you would like to recreate an Art Deco Bathroom, some of the materials you would use include: aluminum, stainless steel, lacquer and inlaid wood. Incorporate the bold use of stepped forms and sweeping curves into your design motifs. Checkered patterns in both floor and wall tiles were also widely popular.

The prevailing theme throughout Art Deco was presenting an artificial representation of “gaudy” luxury and glamour. Today, industry bathroom fixture product manufacturers have created many Art Deco elements for you to use. Since the Art Deco movement drew upon so many different design styles you have a wide choice of design elements to draw upon to create the opulent end result. From a complement of intense colors to the stark lines of art deco, take inspiration from beautifully looking Art Deco or period bathroom styles while at the same time remembering that your bathroom still has to be a stylistically interesting and a desirable place to be since you will be using it everyday so it should also reflect your own interests and taste in décor elements.
