Bathroom Style Trends – “Contemporary” Bathroom Design - Part 3 of 4
5
In part 1 and part 2 of Bathroom Stylistic Trends we looked at “minimalist” bathroom design and “period” bathroom design. In part 3 we will divulge into the stylistic arena of contemporary bathroom design, which tries to incorporate art with engineered design. Contemporary bathroom design like minimalist bathroom design is based upon simple, frequently stylized geometric shapes and forms but unlike minimalist design which strives for simplicity and the optimum interaction of objects in space, contemporary bathroom style has no such limitations. The goal of contemporary design is to create a bathroom that has the stylistic ramifications of the “now” and well into the future. It is dictated by the use of present day materials, technology and leading high-concept designers who are visionaries in the product design field whose goal is to create bathroom fixtures that will not looked dated by the following year.
An emerging trend in contemporary bathroom design is the increasing concern with our environment and our depleting natural resources. Contemporary designers are leaders in the field of water and energy conservation and try to produce pieces that can be reused and recycled. Art as functionality is a recurring theme and it’s not uncommon to play strong geometric shapes against natural textures as a natural contrast. An example of this being juxtaposition fixtures with clean simple lines against a stone bathroom wall or strong grained wood vanity.
Straight simple lines, a limited color gamut and an accent on spatial symmetry are also cues of contemporary bathroom design. Stainless steel also has a modern industrial quality that goes well with contemporary styling in your bathroom. There is also the element of elegant contrast that plays an important role, metallic surfaces such as the polished chrome of the plumbing and shower and washbasin fixtures, along with a shiny stainless steel sink on a richly warm textured bathroom countertop of cherry wood and warm earth tone granite shower wall tiles all equate to an elegant contemporary finished style bath. Sleek sophisticated polished surfaces, unobtrusive simplistic fixtures, comfortable interesting spaces; you can find plenty of examples of different contemporary bathroom designs in trending magazines and online resources alike. And as always you can mix and match finishes and styles if necessary. Remember you are trying to create a feeling as much as a look; a clawfoot tub may be just what you need to finish your bath in style whether you are trying to create a traditional or contemporary bath setting.
In part 4 of Bathroom Style Trends, we will be looking at “modern” bath style design….
