Creative Bathroom Ceiling Ideas

Bathroom ceilings, like bathroom walls and floors must be resistant to moisture and humid conditions. Many times the same surface materials are used on the walls and on the ceiling. Usually along the lines of plaster (stucco) or wallboard covered in paint, wall paper, prefinished paneling or solid wood. Yet you are not limited to these common materials, with a little creativity you can use such materials like sound absorbing tiles or translucent back lighted panels suspended from a ceiling grid to add intrigue and style to your bathroom. Of course your choice of surface materials will in a large part be determined by your predominant decorative theme. Repetition of surface material such as wood floors, wood cabinets, wood walls and wood paneled ceiling throughout your bathroom adds a sense of coherence and creates a visually appealing rustic atmosphere. The only drawback being the seven coats of sealant that has to be applied to everything including the ceiling can initially be time consuming but the effect speaks for itself.

A painted ceiling along with print covered walls is an old classic or you can do the opposite and cover the ceiling with a stimulating geometric print while leaving the walls bare to add some stirring drama. As noted above, walls and ceilings covered in the same print will create dynamic space, just keep the prints subdued so you don’t overwhelm your visitor when he/she uses your bathroom.

Washable ceiling tile is an interesting choice and can be attached to your roof by either gluing directly to your ceiling or stapling the tile to wood strips which you first fasten onto your old ceiling. And if your design taste changes later on, you can always just seal it with a waterproof primer and then paint over it at a later date.

A suspended ceiling in your bathroom is another way to express your creativity. Just like when you are hanging a ceiling in your basement or in an office building, a lightweight wall to wall metal frame or some type of grid system, can be hung from supporting wires attached to your bathroom ceiling. Just remember, to create a solid base; the outer edges of the grid need to be fastened to the walls for that extra support and stability. There are many different materials you can use such as decorated tiles or panels which usually range in size from twelve inches by twelve inches up to four feet by four feet in diameter. One way you can really get creative is by putting in translucent panels with fluorescent strip lighting that shines through the panels to create interesting lighting affects or a continuous illuminated bathroom ceiling that shimmers.

Speaking of lighting, gluing reflective paneling or mirrors to your bathroom ceiling and then directing your track lighting towards the ceiling can also bathe your whole bathroom in light especially in such areas as above your shower where installing a light would not be safe or simply to illuminate a closet or changing area that is partially hidden. And don’t forget to use water resistant adhesive.

As you can see your bathroom ceiling doesn’t have to be boring, just try to choose a ceiling material that is relatively smooth and can be easily wiped from time to time. Pebbled or gritty ceiling materials may be visually appealing but will be much harder to maintain and have a tendency of holding in moisture, mildew and dirt, so choose your ceiling materials carefully.

Installing a Skylight or Roof Window is another way to get creative with your bathroom ceiling ideas!
