The Changing Space of Your Bathroom

If there is one room in your house that has changed the most over time, it has definitely got to be the bathroom. Unlike the outdated utilitarian use of the bathroom, modern bathrooms have become increasingly important to time sensitive homeowners who have increasingly placed more emphasis on the value (or use) of their space than on their return on investment in remodelling or renovating their homes

Making our space more personal, emphasizing what we do with our bathrooms as opposed to what we use to do is becoming increasingly popular. In fact that is why beautifying our bathrooms has turned out to be more important than ever. Pictures, knick knacks, creating themes and sometimes outlandish use of color and patterns all give us a sense of owning the space as we create our own little sanctuary that meets our personal needs and helps us work more comfortably in a stress free environment.

There is also an increasing use of color and light not only as a decorative feature but also as a healing and relaxing way to de-stress and mentally balance the mind and spirit. Chromotheraphy in shower heads, bathtubs and faucets are now becoming stylish. In color therapy, specific colors and accurate amounts of color are deemed to be critical in healing and it has been scientifically proven that colors bring about emotional reactions in people.

Not only our choice of fixtures has become increasingly important but our choice of material also plays an important role in our overall bathroom décor. Cast iron, glass, gold and brushed nickel bring out our personalities with flair and authority to make a fashion statement.

Manufacturers are keying in to this trend and are offering one stop shopping with co-ordinated bathroom suites that are fashionable and also offer matching accessories to round out the décor. If you’re looking for inspiration, then look no further than your television. The same colors that your favourite celebrity is wearing or the trendy hotel he/she is staying at offers you many different design inspirations to wet your palette. And don’t forget the influence of jewellery on the design of fixtures and accessories as they become more decorative and splashy.

Technology has aided in our personalization of our bathroom space. We can now preset the shower to turn on at a predetermined time, at a predetermined temperature, turn on music or news and input whether or not we want a water massage. Infra-red faucets, hydraulic toilet seats, touch sensitive garbage bins and multimedia systems can also independently turn on and pre-record programs so that we can relax and watch at our convenience.

Never before in the history of man has such customization and convenience been available to us in the bathroom. It is not farfetched to believe in the near future where we could walk into our bathroom and by a simple voice activated command all our pre-sets would automatically be set in motion to pamper the home owner and meet our every need.

We have tips and tricks to freshen up your bath.
