Medicine Cabinets – A Taste of Good Bathroom Design
24
Your typical bathroom medicine cabinet has many different useful purposes. It not only serves as a convenient place to store your medicines, you can also hide your toiletries away and the cabinet door doubles as a versatile swinging mirror. While you may be able to store these items elsewhere such as in a pull out drawer or a nearby closet, the medicine cabinet provides relatively secure, accessible and convenient location in case of an emergency.
Most medicine cabinets are designed to be recessed into your wall for a more streamlined design look but if pipes or framing or even wiring makes this impossible, you can also purchase units that will surface mount on your bathroom wall and come with single or double sided mirrors. These cabinets usually extend out about four to six inches from the wall and range in size from fifteen to eighteen inches wide for a single unit or about thirty to forty-eight inches wide for a double or triptych unit.
You also have the choice of hinged or sliding door units, number of adjustable shelves and whether or not they come with mirrors. There are even units specially designed for corners. If you want to get creative then purchase a pair of bathroom cabinets and put a mirror in between them, this way you can create an adjustable three-way-mirror to assist you with your grooming needs. If you prefer an all-in-one, there are also units that have three mirror built directly into the cabinet. But don’t let convention limit your creativity, why not hang your favorite picture on the cabinet door? Better yet, do you even need a door?
Some come without frames and some offer you a wide variety of frames made of such materials as wood, brass, chrome or other precious metals. And to aid with your grooming, some even come with lights installed along the top. Depending upon your needs you can get a simple everyday unit or you can purchase an elaborate model five feet wide made of precious materials and exhibiting glamorous style, with such features as cabinets and drawers and slide out trays to hold your toiletries. How about mirrors on both sides of your cabinet doors or dimmers for your lights or richly etched mirrors with hidden hinges.
Like any other fixture in your bathroom you should consider how the medicine cabinet will related to the other décor in the room. Size and its overall proportions when opened or closed should align and sync with your vanity so that it does not overwhelm the vanity and take away from the flow of the design you are trying to create.

You have some good ideas for bathrooms. That has been one of the recurring themes in my own life–looking for a way to make our bathrooms and our kitchen look really glorious, even though those rooms are much too small. One of the glories of the Internet, though, is that there is absolutely no dearth of ideas. Right now I have no idea of what I will ultimately do, but I keep hoping I will come up with something really slick.
