Ta Da! - Designing Your Bathroom With Style by Finding Your Inner Design Child!

So many people get hung up on what they consider to be good design that they are brought to a standstill before they even begin. So what is good design? Truth be known, there is no one real good way of designing your bathroom. What you should be asking yourself is, does the layout functionality work for me and do I like the way it looks. Then the only step that remains is how can I make it look even better.

When coming up with your design ideas, function should be the basic building block of your blueprint. This includes such things as your layout, the placement of fixtures and the all important storage issue. It’s always a good idea to highlight the best features of the room and try to downplay the not so good attributes. For example if you have a beautiful view and lots of privacy from your bathroom, you could highlight this feature by creating large panoramic windows that draws the focus of the room. If on the other hand your bathroom is adjacent to a dirty old brick wall then you would somehow minimize the view through shear curtains or even something like a stained glass window. Just remember not to obscure the much needed natural light.

What impact or mood are you trying to convey? Do you want the feeling of extravagance or would you prefer a more understated mood? This of course is purely a personal design matter, only you know your individual taste and style. It should be noted here that your design will go a lot smoother from the very beginning if you know the tone and look you are trying to create. A lot of people think they don’t have style but just look around you. How you arrange your room, apartment or house, gives you clues as to how you have already made decisions about your space and how it is presented.

Is your style eclectic or do you like conformity of shapes and colors? Do you like your style and don’t want to change it or are you looking for some inspiration; home and garden magazines are a great starting point for ideas. Look through a magazine or book and take note of the ones that catch your eye, some will appeal to you while others will make you cringe. Write these down and look for trends in your choices but don’t just look at the whole picture, examine the details as well because you may not like the cabinet but you may really like the knobs. These tendencies will help you decide what elements you want to include in your design. If you like marble, columns and sculptural shapes then you should look at Classical design reminiscent of grand old Roman style baths.

To personalize your bathroom space you first have to understand what you are drawn to; look at the lines, the forms, the patterns and the textures you find appealing and include these elements in your bathroom design. Above all, function should come before design. Use this exercise to spark your own creativity, who knows what bathroom masterpiece is lurking behind that thoughtful smile.
